Advantages of Vegetable Tanning

Vegetable tanned leather is more durable and can last a lifetime. With time and care, it will develop a rich ‘patina’ enhancing its natural beauty. The dyes used in Vegetable tanning leather are extracted from plants, so the leather is safe to wear and has a natural smell to it. (Chrome Oil-Tanned leather is produced using carcinogenic chemicals that are harmful to you and the environment.) The vegetable tanning process produces rich warm tones that look completely natural. Vegetable tanned leathers are more valuable and therefore sell at a higher price compared to chrome tanned leathers.

Disadvantages of Vegetable Tanning

The average time of the vegetable tanning process is similar to that of chromium but can take up to 65 days to produce. Vegetable tanned products are more expensive because they require more skill set and knowledge to tan the leather, increasing the overall quality of the leather. The colors which result from the vegetable tanning process are limited therefore increasing their demand. Once we get the leather from the tanneries, we then re-select them and start cutting the edges and skin parts that are not useful at our Workshop. A crucial step in the process so we can ensure every piece of leather is consistent.
